It was a big blow to the Philadelphia Flyers and general manager Chuck Fletcher when the team lost a key defenseman.

Matt Niskanen virtually decided to retire out of nowhere and Fletcher just wasn't able to fill that hole through free agency or trade.

After last year's disastrous season, Fletcher has revamped the blueline and it looks in a way better position that it did last year.

Now some details have been revealed regarding Niskanen's situation.

Flyers' insider Bill Meltzer reports that Niskanen never filed his retirement papers so the Flyers have kept him suspended without pay.

This was done for salary cap purposes.

Does this show that Niskanen just wanted to walk away from the Flyers and not necessarily from hockey?

More details to come.
