Flyers fans will have to stay up late to watch the first three games of the 2017-18 season, but after six months of no hockey that won’t be a problem!

The Flyers will have a new look when they take the ice tonight.  Captain Claude Giroux will start the season on the left wing of the top line with Sean Couturier and Jakub Voracek.  Nolan Patrick, the second overall pick of last June’s NHL Entry Draft, will make his pro debut tonight centering the second line. Newcomer Jori Lehtera, acquired from the Blues in the Brayden Schenn, will have to wait at least one more day to make his team debut as he will be a healthy scratch tonight.

One the back end, it appears that Shayne Gostisbehere will play tonight as he took line rushes with Robert Hagg during today’s morning skate in San Jose.  While many fans were excited that both Sam Morin and Travis Sanheim made the team out of training camp, both rookies will be healthy scratches versus the Sharks tonight.

Brian Elliott will make his first start in goal for the Flyers tonight. He has plenty of experience against the Sharks in his career and has done well. Elliott is 6-4-1 with a 2.56 goals-against average, a .920 save percentage and two shutouts in 13 career games versus San Jose.

Tonight will mark the first time since 1997 when the Sharks will field a roster without Patrick Marleau on it.  They will look to some of their youngsters to replace Marleau’s 27 goals and 46 points from last season.

Marleau was not the only notable departure from San Jose over the offseason.  Defensemen David Schlemko and Mirco Mueller are now in Montreal and New Jersey respectively.

The Sharks offense last season had the same problem the Flyers did where they have a handful of good goal scorers, but lack in secondary scoring.  San Jose will once again have to rely on goaltender Martin Jones to steal them points throughout the year to lead them back to the playoffs.
