Regular Season Stats
Michael Del Zotto has been known as an offensive defenseman for most of his NHL career. You can deal with some of the mistakes in his own zone during the seasons in which he was scoring over 30 points, but he has scored 31 total points over the last two years, one less than he did in his first year with the Flyers alone.
Del Zotto proved that he can still shoot the puck as he averaged nearly two shots per game, but he could not rack up the points. When he was healthy, he averaged 19:30 of ice time per game, over a minute less per game than his career average.
After a very impressive 2014-15 season with the Flyers, frankly, the most interesting thing about Del Zotto the past two seasons has been his Instagram account. He became the team’s number one offensive defenseman when Dave Hakstol took over, but a wrist injury ended his 2015-16 season early and delayed the start to his 2016-17 campaign.
We saw glimpses of the 2014-15 version of Del Zotto last season, but they were few and far between. With a crop of talented young defensemen in the Flyers system, it came as no surprise when Del Zotto was allowed to walk via free agency this summer.
The Vancouver Canucks gave Del Zotto a two-year deal worth $3 million per season, which could be considered a risk for a defenseman who has missed 62 games due to injuries over the past two seasons.
How would you rate Michael Del Zotto’s 2016-17 performance?
