One of the biggest pieces of news to come out of Ron Hextall and Dave Hakstol’s press conference on Thursday was the dismissal of assistant coach Joe Mullen.

Mullen, who has been on the Flyers bench for the past 10 years, was in charge of the power play.  While the Flyers were riding their 10-game winning streak in December and January, they had the top rated power play in the entire NHL.  The power play dropped all the way to 14th by the end of the season and was quite dreadful during the month of March.

“I’m not laying anything on Joe Mullen,” Hextall said, per philly.com. “It was a gut call on my part. I felt like we needed to make a change. It’s not because of necessarily the power play. It’s just one of those things where I feel like we needed a change.”

Both Hextall and Hakstol praised Mullen as both a great coach and great person, but they decided to not renew his contract for next season.  Both Ian Laperriere and Gord Murphy will return next year.

Do you agree with this decision?
